reading round-up (3-1)

Um - so I read SEVEN (7!) books in February. And February is a short month. I'm kind of amazed. And to answer your question - yes, my house is still (relatively) clean. Here is the rundown:

Code Name Verity - it's getting huge acclaim (or it received huge acclaim) - I think it is a Printz nominee book. I liked it - and by the time I finished it - I really really liked it. But that's because I knew the end from the beginning. I could see myself reading this again now that I know all the plot twists - it's a pretty great puzzle.

Coming Apart - The State of White America -slow. Slow. SLOW. But at the same time, I found myself in a work meeting mentioning some of the things I learned. It made me sound pretty awesome and pretty educated. So there you go - worth my time if only to show off to my boss.

The Silver Linings Playbook - yes, it was a book first. And the book is fun and interesting and quirky. I kind of loved it. It makes me want and not want to see the movie.

The One and Only Ivan - this won the Newbery award this year - and I loved it. I am excited when Henry is old enough for us to read this one together. In the meantime - how has this story not been made into a Pixar movie yet?

Book of Mormon Girl - some people consider this book controversial. I really loved hearing her growing up Mormon. I understood so much of her background - it makes me want to be a better person.

Where'd You Go, Bernadette - The author is coming to speak at Sundance this month so I thought I would check this out. The cover does a disservice because it makes it look like some chick-lit ridiculous when in reality - it is funny, sad, dysfunctional, and interesting - all at the same time.

Still Alice - early onset alzheimers. Enough said. And now when I forget the name of something all I can think of is "do I have the gene?"

I would definitely recommend Silver Linings, Ivan (it would depend on the person), Book of Mormon Girl (again, depends on the person), and Where'd You Go Bernadette.

Whoa! That's a lot of reading. A wise woman once said "I don't read books, 'cause if they're any good, they're gonna make 'em into a miniseries." I'm sure Kitty will knit a prize for the first person who can name this woman.

My wanna-be teacher students are reading middle-school age books for class (which I do not believe you are above):

The Graveyard Book
Wonder
The Notorious Benedict Arnold
Inside Out & Back Again
Walk Two Moons
Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper

Naomi - I've read wonder and the graveyard book and loved them both. I'm reading "bomb" by the same guy who wrote notorious benedict and I'm not loving it. The others I'm putting on my list. Thank you!

I read Book of Mormon Girl and had some parts that surprised and challenged me. That said, she made me love Pioneer Day more, and gave me some things to think about that really rooted my faith. Would love a good chat about that book sometime. It's not one I recommend for people to read because of the controversy that you mentioned, but would love a good light hearted chat.

My resolution was to read less, get outside more. Luckily for you I am failing miserably. Just read These is My Words, if you haven't read it it is a must read. Also liked Night Circus (Morgenstern). Just re-read Rebecca (du Maurier) loved it as much as the first time...which is good because I am really in need of buying new books but won't let myself! Next on my list is Peace like a River and Under Fishbone Clouds. Oh I also liked The Passage, but I'm Sortof a sucker for anything vampire-ish so take that suggestion or leave it.

Good to know!

Just for the record, I LOVED Silver Linings Playbook the movie. Loooved it. So, take that for what it's worth.

I also loved BOM Girl. I guess I don't think it's that controversial, but maybe I'm controversial?? :) Eek!

I'm putting those other books on my list to read stat.
