With the end of October I am really cutting this goal of 52 books read for the year close. So far I've read 45 - I have 7 to go and 2 months to do it. Good thing we cancelled cable. I have made some poor choices - for example, I'm working on listening to the book "Truman" by David McCullough. This book is 47 discs long. FORTY-SEVEN discs. I guess you would consider this a very thorough treatment of Harry S. So I continue slogging through it - it's interesting but did I mention it's 47 discs long?
Anyway - here is my book report for October:
The First 20 Minutes: ** - it was interesting but oh goodness it just seemed a little too long. But I am reminded that really - I need to work out harder and not necessarily longer to get the benefits. But at this point in my life - I just need to work out.
Heartburn: *** - I have never read anything by Nora Ephron but goodness - I'm going to now. I love her movies - "You've Got Mail" (I could quote several lines from this one) "Sleepless in Seattle", "When Harry Met Sally" - good stuff. I was six pages in to the book and I knew I was going to like it. The writing is sharp, tight, and clever. Now I need to see this movie.
Splendors and Glooms: ** - I read this on a recommendation that this book is going to win the Newbery Medal this year. I hope it doesn't. I didn't love it. It wasn't bad but I've read much better.
Wild: ***1/2 - My favorite book of the month. I loved this. It makes me want to become an outdoor mountain woman and hike the Appalachian Trail (not the PCT - I want it to be a little bit easier). But really - I am excited to help Henry get his orienteering mountain badge. That's weird since he can't even walk yet but still - it's on my mind.

Krissi, do you think that my book clubs would like to read Heartburn? We are going to be looking for new books come January.
We were oriented Thursday night into our RS callings and they are telling me that I really need to read and study my handbook. It is going to be hard to get those book club books read. Maybe one of the book clubs will let me select the Handbook for a month of reading. That would be funny wouldn't it.
You would love the App. Trail. We lived right near it in North Carolina. And have done many hikes on different parts of it from Maine down to NC.
So I'd be interested to hear what you are learning about that guy . . . oh goodness, my mind went black. Truman? Anyhow, the 47-disc one. :)
