baby on the brain(?)

See the title of this post? It really should be "baby on the bladder" but that sounds gross and too personal so just forget that I said that. I sent this email out to the office this morning:

All,

Just thought I would let you know that we’ll have a new employee starting in the Preprofessional office sometime in November. He’s even graciously posed for a picture to help you get to know him (see attached). (Actually I can’t find the real picture – so this one will have to do).

No names yet – although Greg is pulling for “Constantine” – I say, “over my dead body” on that one.

FAQ’s:

1)      I will be taking FMLA but I won’t be quitting my day job (I love it too much)
2)      Yes – this means the missionaries are leaving our house (hallelujah!)
3)      If you’ve wondered if I’ve just been eating at a lot of bbq’s – stop wondering – I’m not getting fat – but the baby is (at least I hope that is the way it works).
4)      This is probably the worst kept secret in the world – but we wanted to make sure all things were a go before we make any big announcements – so thanks for being patient if you’ve been wondering but haven’t wanted to say anything . . . .

My coworker stopped by and said, in essence - I'm glad you said something because I was worried you were just packing on the lb's. So warm - so comforting.

So here is the question of the day - feel free to answer or not answer it - we have pretty much ZERO baby things. ZERO. So - what is the one thing that you suggest? Pretty please - tell us - we are desperate in the sense that either we are going to buy everything because we think we need it or we are going to end up buying nothing because we don't want to waste our money on crap. And then all of the sudden we realize that the hospital won't let us leave unless we actually buy a carseat. See - we are kind of in trouble.

What are you talking about? We totally have lots of Legos for the baby to play with.

Congrats Kris Tina!!

I def suggest purchasing a baby popasan and/or a swing. It's nice to have something other than a crib to let the baby sit or sleep in.

Krissi, this is what I think you need:

1. A crib or bassinet

2. Dresser to put clothes, diapers

3. Little bath tub, it seems like\
Telacia had a cool one.

4. A rocking chair w/a clock so you
can look at it to see when the next feeding should be.

To me they are the basics, and the pioneers didn't even have that so it depends on how roughing it you want to go.

Car seat/stroller.

White onesies.

Baby soap and lotion.

Trash magazines.

Gowns for baby...yup, I even put Alex in gowns. LOVED them. So easy to change diapers in the middle of the night.

Lansinoh (look this one up).

Swaddling blankets. He can sleep anywhere if he's swaddled really good. You need Dave to give you a lesson on this. He is the BOMB.

Lots of batteries in your camera.

I'll think of more and tell you later. :)

First off, the expression is "all of a sudden" not "all of the sudden". I don't want baby to show up at school one day sounding like an idiot, so I feel I have no choice but to point these things out.

Secondly, you don't need to buy anything for at least the first year. You need to start kissing up to friends so they keep throwing you baby showers until you have everything you need/want. All you need to do is register. At the top of the list: a Diaper Genie. Now which one of your friends is going to step up and voluteer to host the first shower?

I still think that "Ross" is an appropriate name....

I am loving this list. Keep 'em coming!

Congratulations!!! You will need a truckload of yarn.

Get a good car seat. And a good stroller (I love the Valco we got when Ruby was born). Get all other equipment at garage sales, craigslist, etc. And get rid of equipment as soon as it is outgrown... storing a bouncy chair, swing, tub, excersaucer, etc for any amount of time (when it is no longer being used) is just not worth it. The equipment will take over your home if you let it.

Get a comfy chair to sit in. And a new nursing wardrobe. Lansinoh.

I would say a bouncy chair that you can move with you from room to room, and then lots of basic baby linens like onsies, burp rags, and receiving blankets. Since I am in the throws of newbornhood I'll tell you that I spend a good part of every day trying to find something that isn't covered in spit up.

Oh. And Legos.

Clothes: the fewer buttons, snaps, bows (hopefully none here) and other annoying and time-consuming contrivances the better. Zippers are fine. Slip on/ slip off clothing (like normal humans wear but somehow difficult to find for babies) is loads easier. Besides, this way you won't find that your husband snapped the onesie on the outside of your baby's pants at church. Jim called it 'technical details'.

The Bravado Seamless Nursing Bra. Make sure it is the seamless model. Amazon has them but you have to know your size. I heard Dillards has them in stock? (unconfirmed rumor)

If you are going back to work: Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump. Get it used--it is much cheaper & the pump is basically just a power source. You can buy all new tubing & breast cups. Target has the breast cups I think. I had to hit the nursing center at the hospital for the tubing. I love the backpack style, but maybe the over the shoulder one would feel more esquire-ish? I have two--for home AND at work--and it's blissful not to have to cart them back & forth.

Bottles? I'm a big fan of the Avent BPA free bottles. But, you can straight up breast feed without a pump or bottles for the first 6 weeks. So, you can put off acquisition.

Car seat
Swing
Baby Bjorn (both our boys so far have preferred riding kangaroo-style post-utero; and let's face it: there is a reason you have TWO ARMS. You need the use of both!)

Diaper pails are a waste of money in my book. Get those filled up nasties OUT OF THE HOUSE altogether. This is even more critical when they start eating solids.

Seriously. You've been housing the elders. You know that smells can permeate your dwelling place, eh? :-) Only keep clean unused Pampers newborn swaddlers within your walls.

Get some J&J baby powder with corn starch along with your desitin & the lil' guys back side will be much less prone to diaper rash. Sprinkle the powder on after the desitin with EVERY diaper change. It helps to prevents 'road rash'....

OK, I better stop. You said basics, and I'm onto a novel here...

A nanny!! Kids are exhausting. Maybe I will be better help when I haven't been on a 3 week trip with my kids.

Somewhere for the baby to sleep, ride in the car, and one or two things to dress him in. Oh and we are big sound machine people. But that is controversial (Last time I suggested that on someones facebook, I got about 100 comments how that was bad) I just like to be loud at my house and my kid stay asleep.

This is my AP baby wish list that I could never afford myself, but you should get this stuff:

Phil and Teds Dash jogging stroller

Glider rocker.

Medela breast pump. The cadillac of breast pumps. I hate that I wrote that on your blog, but it will make your life so much better.

Everything else you should borrow from friends.
