Desert Island Pick

One of my favorite radio shows is Sound Opinions. Since Utah doesn't carry it yet, I listen via podcast. They do a segment from time to time called their desert island jukebox pick - basically if you were stranded on an island with a jukebox, what songs would you want to have that you could listen to over and over. I like that idea so much that I'm introducing a new Carlklef version - our own jukebox if you will.

So what is my first pick? How about a tune from
The Smiths. I first heard the Smiths because my older cousins would play their albums and talk about them when I was visiting and idolizing them (we can also trace my fascination with USC and making photo collages to them). Then I bought a best of album and really started to enjoy the music on its own merits. Morrissey writes fantastically bummed-out lyrics that are made beautiful through Johnny Marr's skillful guitar playing. I'm sure there are much better reviews out there, but the point is that this band has been one of the most enduring set of songs in my collection. The track I am going to pick is off the band's fourth and final album Strangeways, Here We Come released in September 1987. The track is Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before and I think it is still one of my favorite Smith's tracks. Check out the song and the video of my desert island pick.

I like this song - but I think I'll always have soft spot in my heart for "Girlfriend in a Coma"

It's pretty hard to choose just one. Both Best of (1 & 2) are great all the way through.

Another great song I'm sure you could listen to for hours on end is "Used to Love Her" by Guns and Roses. It has great lyrics like:

"I used to love her,
but I had to kill her.
I had to put her
6 feet under
and I can still hear
her complain"

It's a classic.

I don't think Todd has ever heard that song. If he has heard it - it was probably from watching one of those amazing lifetime movies.

You are dead wrong, Kitty. I used to work with a guy at the Hut (Pizza Hut) that listened to it all the time. They would never play that on Lifetime television for women. Maybe on Spike TV.
