This weekend we did something quite spectacular for September . . . we attended the Miss Murray pageant. That's right. It was amazing. It was pretty much like watching "Drop Dead Gorgeous" in real time. (For those of you who have never seen this movie - you are missing out - but just know that it was made before Kirstie Alley went on Oprah and walked in a bikini with nylons on and before Denise Richard's life got so complicated.) Anyway. We were privy to a lot of monologues (just a hint - ladies - don't do a monologue unless you have good comedic timing), lyrical dances (because we love SYTYCD we watched these things with a critical eye) and a couple of broadway tunes. All this talent PLUS a girl who played the saxophone to the "pink panther" theme song.
When answering the questions we heard such statements as "We really should stay in Iraq and finish what we started" and "We shouldn't bail out others" and "I'm going to fight crime."
I must say that watching the swimsuit portion of the competition - we were all uncomfortable.
There was also a guy there who was a professional pageant judge. How does one get such a job? Just kind of intriguing. We also saw famous Mayor Snarr and his ridiculous mustache.
Why did we go to this? Well, my sister had a bee in her bonnet about the event and we wanted to support her love for the Miss Murray pageant. But it was so much fun - next year we are totally going to go again.
For those of you keeping track of our budget - just know that the $8 tickets came out of our "mad money" fund. At the conclusion of the event - we think it was a bit overpriced.

WHOA!!! September real is building up to a spectacular level. I think we should pick some unsuspecting young lady and coach her to be the next Miss Murray. What are the age ranges for this? Are you too old Kitty? Maybe we could coach your nieces. If we want to win we certainly can't be using words like "budget". Those sequined gowns aren't cheap, and everyone knows the the sparkliest girl wins.
The fact that the Miss Murray platform is Crime Prevention makes me picture this to be like Miss Congeniality. Did anyone get punched in the nose or tackled right before a big on stage explosion? Or did anyone say in their interview portion that they wanted harsher punishment for parole violators...and world peace?
I was expecting more rhinestones.
I'm glad you guys are enjoying the local culture. I think the most important thing you can do in preparation for next year's pageant is figure out how to get on the judging panel. Definitely.
I agree with your friend Lindy, you should definitely campaign to be a judge next year. Clearly, you are over-qualified for the position!
Over-qualified in judginess.
Just to clear things up right now--you enjoyed it WAY more than $8.00. Admit it--you would have paid double.
Carrie, I've heard Kitty talk about the Miss Murray pageant so much I feel like I've gotten more than $8 worth of entertainment out of it.
I would have loved to have gone to this. It makes it even more fun when you know some of the girls that are participating.
hahahaha this was fun stumbling upon this.
That's me.
the year I wont 1st attendent.
I won Miss Murray the next year.
If you want to know more about what I did, be sure to visit Payit4ward.org.
FYI, in order to be a judge it's a pretty long process, but if you really want to do it someday you just let me know ;)
